Introduction
Palazzo pants are comfortable, stylish, and incredibly easy to stitch when you understand the underlying crotch formula. A common mistake beginners make is cutting the crotch depth too short, leading to uncomfortable pulling when sitting down.
In this article from Ojasvi Creations, you will learn the universal formula to draft both simple and wide-leg flared palazzo pants for any hip size.

Step 1: Essential Measurements Needed
- Palazzo Length: Desired total length.
- Hip Circumference: Measure the fullest part of your hips (critical for calculating waist ease and crotch depth).
- Bottom Flare / Leg Opening: Width desired at the hem.
Step 2: The Universal Palazzo Drafting Formulas
1. Upper Waist Line & Elastic Margin
Fold your fabric into 4 layers. At the top edge, leave 2 inches for the elastic fold/casing.
- Palazzo Waist Width = (Hip Circumference ÷ 4) + 2.5 inches
2. Crotch Depth (Seat Depth)
Formula for measuring down from the elastic fold line:
- Crotch Depth = (Hip Circumference ÷ 4) + 2 inches
(For larger sizes above 40 inches hip, add 2.5 inches).
3. Crotch Curve Extension
From the crotch depth point, extend outwards by 2 to 2.5 inches and draw a smooth, gentle inner thigh curve.
Step 3: Marking Leg Flare & Inseam
- From the bottom edge, mark your desired leg width (e.g., 12 inches for straight palazzo or 16+ inches for wide flare).
- Connect the crotch extension curve down to the bottom hem width with a straight/slanted ruler line.
Step 4: Cutting Tips
- Cut the front and back pieces together if making a standard elasticized palazzo.
- Give a gentle 0.5 inch upward slant curve at the outer bottom hem to prevent the sides from dragging on the floor when walking.
